CURRENT WORK - FIELDS OF LIGHT SERIES
The focus of my new series "Fields of Light" is the mosaic and rhythm of patterns evident on the agricultural landscape when viewed from above. I associate these aerial views with designs that I have seen in art from cultures around the world. The ancient Phrygians expressed their devotion to the Goddess through a repetition of vertical and horizontal lines. Floor mosaics in Pompeii distinctly echo the manmade circular and striped patterns marking the landscape throughout the United States.

Studying this view from above has influenced the perception of my more immediate world. Ordinary textures and designs such as peeling paint and cracked asphalt trigger similar associations. As I move through the environment, I discover that these visual codes exist everywhere and invigorate my sensory experience.

These beautiful agricultural arrangements of contoured and straight or angled rows, which were designed for purely pragmatic reasons, are perfect expressions of the innate sense of patterning expressed throughout human culture.
